President Kersti Kaljulaid met today in Helsinki with the Prime Minister of Finland, Antti Rinne, to discuss cooperation in the European Union, Finland’s upcoming presidency of the Council of the EU, environmental protection and the energy security of the region.

According to President Kaljulaid, it is important to find solutions, fast, for rendering electricity production climate-neutral, and it would be sensible and reasonable for the Nordic countries to achieve this in cooperation, as we share the same energy market. Cooperation within the European Union and the priorities established by Finland for their upcoming presidency of the Council of the European Union were discussed at length. The options available for enhanced cooperation to protect the Gulf of Finland, including measures to reduce the amount of plastic reaching the sea, were also discussed.
