This morning, President Kersti Kaljulaid called a meeting with Prime Minister Jüri Ratas, Minister of Defence Jüri Luik and Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Reinsalu in order to discuss the latest developments in Belarus, Estonia’s positions and further activities.

“Our goal is to ensure that the people of Belarus could freely decide on their future. It is particularly befitting to recall this here in Estonia today,” said the President of the Republic after the meeting. “Estonia’s response to the events to date has been appropriate. Our positions have been clear, strong and timely. The election in Belarus was neither free nor fair and therefore we do not recognise it,” President Kaljulaid added.

According to the Head of State, the unity of democratic countries and coordination of reactions are also important in relation to further developments. “The Baltic States have been united in these questions. As we are located right here next to Belarus, it is also an extremely important signal to the people of Belarus. The respective stance adopted by European Council President Charles Michel yesterday is similarly noteworthy. Coordination is also important when implementing Europe’s next steps and possible sanctions and ensuring their effectiveness,” said the Head of State.

In addition to the events in Belarus, matters pertaining to this week’s coup in Mali were also discussed at the meeting.
