President Kaljulaid discussed cooperation with her Croatian colleague

18.06.2019

The Heads of State of Estonia and Croatia discussed cooperation in the economic and digital spheres and the European Union, particularly in relation to Croatia’s upcoming presidency of the European Union. “Both Estonia and Croatia are in favour of the further enlargement of the European Union, and it is important for Estonia to ensure that all countries that demonstrate their will to implement reforms and share the same value space as us become involved in the expansion discussions – including today’s Eastern Partnership programme countries, Georgia and Ukraine,” said President Kaljulaid at today’s meeting with the President of Croatia, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, who arrived in Estonia for an official visit.

According to the President of the Republic, Estonia and Croatia are both countries that value openness, which brings about innovation and boldness to take global action. For this reason, several Estonian enterprises are interested in entering the Croatian market – this has been already done by Bolt, Goswift and Funderbeam.

The Estonian Head of State also thanked Croatia for its contribution to the security of our region as a part of NATO’s extended defence cooperation in Poland and Lithuania. Croatia will also join the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence and the first expert will be sent over in August.

Issues discussed in length at the meeting included the Three Seas Initiative, energy security and the options available for cooperation in the digital sphere. The Head of State of Croatia will also meet with the Estonian Prime Minister and the Speaker of the Riigikogu. President Grabar-Kitarović will then place a wreath at the Statute of Liberty and visit the memorial at Maarjamäe. In the evening, President Kaljulaid will host an official dinner in honour of the President of Croatia in the Estonian War Museum in Viimsi.
