President Kaljulaid: the security and foreign policy of the European Union needs to be uniform

"For the sake of the future of Europe, the Member States of the European Union must remain uniform in the changed security situation and post-Brexit era," said President Kersti Kaljulaid, who met with the President of Slovakia, Andrej Kiska, during her working visit to Bratislava.

At their meeting, the heads of state of Estonia and Slovakia focused on the challenges faced by Europe. "The European Union must focus on co-operation between the Member States and common goals; this is the only option to emerge stronger from the challenges that Europe is facing," said the Estonian Head of State.

"I am happy to state that as European Union Member States and members of NATO, Estonia and Slovakia share a similar understanding of the security situation in Europe and contribution to defence-related co-operation," said President Kaljulaid.

Andrej Kiska, the President of Slovakia, praised Estonia's decision to contribute to defence expenses, which this year amount to 2.2% of its gross domestic product.

The heads of state also discussed the impact of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union and concluded, together, that close co-operation between the Member States and the United Kingdom must also continue after the latter has left the European Union.

The President of Slovakia wished Estonia luck during its Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which is to commence this summer.

President Kaljulaid will participate in a Globsec security forum panel on the future of Europe with the Slovak Finance Minister Peter Kažimir, former Polish Prime Minister Jan Krzysztof Bielecki, the Director of the Delors Institute, Yves Bertoncini, and State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Ivan Korčok.

Globsec brings together important public opinion-makers on European foreign and security policy, politicians and representatives of think tanks, and it is the best represented Central-European security forum.
