President Kaljulaid: Ukraine must be allowed to decide its own fate

At today's meeting, the President of the Republic, Kersti Kaljulaid, and the Head of State of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, focused on the situation in Eastern Ukraine, relations between Ukraine and the European Union and the implementation of reforms in Ukraine.

President Kaljulaid emphasised after the meeting that the sanctions imposed on Russia must remain in force until full implementation of the Minsk agreements. "The territorial integrity of Ukraine must be restored and Russia must halt the destabilisation of Ukraine," said the Head of State.

When commenting on the relations between Ukraine and the European Union, President Kaljulaid noted that Estonia supports the prompt granting of visa-free travel to Ukrainian citizens. "We hope for deeper practical co-operation between the EU and Eastern Partnership countries, and real steps need to be taken for this to be achieved. Estonia remains committed to advancing the Eastern Partnership, which will be a priority of Estonia's upcoming Presidency to the Council of the EU," Kaljulaid added.

The need to continue with domestic reforms in Ukraine was also discussed at the meeting of heads of state. According to President Kaljulaid, Ukraine has made some progress in this sphere, but the work that has been started needs to be continued. "Estonia continues to support reforms in Ukraine. Ukraine needs our support, understanding and help. Each country must have the right to decide its own fate," said President Kaljulaid.

The President of Ukraine thanked Estonia for the support it has offered to Ukraine, for example for providing medical rehabilitation services to Ukrainian soldiers.

Tonight, the President of the Republic will host a formal dinner in Tallinn Town Hall for the President of Ukraine.
