In the course of the past 25 years, the two European nations have set a strong foundation for the close and substantive relationship, based on historical ties, shared European values such as democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights as well as common interests. Estonia firmly supports Georgia's European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations.

Our bonds of history date back already in the 19th century when first Estonians settled in Georgia. After gaining independence in the beginning of 20th century, Georgia and Estonia established respective diplomatic missions. Today, numerous people-to-people contacts, active relations between institutions and frequent high-level visits illustrate the closeness of our bilateral relations in variety of fields.

Statement by President Kersti Kaljulaid in response to events in Syria http://www.president.ee/en/media/statements/13182-statement-by-president-kersti-kaljulaid-in-response-to-events-in-syria http://www.president.ee/en/media/statements/13182-statement-by-president-kersti-kaljulaid-in-response-to-events-in-syria The chemical weapons attack carried out by the Assad regime against its own people three days ago was a monstrous crime with no justification whatsoever. The international agreement of 2013 according to which Syria agreed to give up control over its chemical weapons has amounted to nothing more than hot air.

The airstrike against a Syrian military airbase carried out by the US last night is a direct consequence of the chemical attack. The West could not remain indifferent. The use of chemical weapons is in direct violation of everything that we stand for, including international agreements and UN Security Council resolutions. The Syrian crisis cannot be resolved peacefully unless the international community intervenes more decisively. The current course of action has not brought success. War criminals must be brought to justice.

We are exchanging information with the US and other allies and following closely further developments in Syria. We stand together so that these attacks cannot be repeated. We stand together for security. I have convened the National Defence Council for Monday in order to exchange information and discuss developments in Syria.
