The international agreement of 2013 according to which Syria agreed to give up control over its chemical weapons has amounted to nothing more than hot air.

The airstrike against a Syrian military airbase carried out by the US last night is a direct consequence of the chemical attack. The West could not remain indifferent. The use of chemical weapons is in direct violation of everything that we stand for, including international agreements and UN Security Council resolutions. The Syrian crisis cannot be resolved peacefully unless the international community intervenes more decisively. The current course of action has not brought success. War criminals must be brought to justice.

We are exchanging information with the US and other allies and following closely further developments in Syria. We stand together so that these attacks cannot be repeated. We stand together for security. I have convened the National Defence Council for Monday in order to exchange information and discuss developments in Syria.

The chemical weapons attack carried out by the Assad regime against its own people three days ago was a monstrous crime with no justification whatsoever.
