President Kaljulaid: Schengen has given border communities impetus for co-operation

"As neighbours, we did have close relations before; however, the abolishment of border control at the border control points in Estonia and Latvia following the establishment of a common Schengen visa space made communication between people even easier and smoother and gave impetus to border communities for greater co-operation and the joint development of their communities," said President Kersti Kaljulaid in Valga, at an event held to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Schengen.

President Kaljulaid to participate in the strategy forum of the Munich Security Conference President Kersti Kaljulaid will today embark on a work visit to Germany where she will participate in a forum held to make preparations for Munich Security Conference that will take place at the beginning of next year.

The forum will bring together a small number of American and European opinion leaders, current and former politicians and think-tank representatives to discuss current foreign and security policy issues. President Kaljulaid in Iceland: in the 21st century, small states can be larger than merely their area in square kilometres "Although, inevitably, we must consider geopolitics on the one hand and real policy on the other, in the 21st century small states can be larger than merely their area in square kilometres, said President Kersti Kaljulaid today, in a public address given in Iceland about the challenges and opportunities of small states.

Small states can be more flexible, adopt decisions quicker and are often more successful in implementing new solutions and governance systems, said the President of the Republic, giving Estonia's success in building up a digital society as an example.
