President Kersti Kaljulaid met today in Brussels with the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker. Issues related to the future of the European Union, shaping the next financial period as well as energy policies, the Eastern Partnership and large-scale infrastructure projects were discussed at the meeting.

"The shaping of the next financial period will be more complicated than before – spending wishes have increased, though the budget amounts available for re-distribution will be tighter than before once the United Kingdom leaves the EU. Therefore, the budget needs to be approached not just by bringing together the needs of all the Member States, but by giving more attention to cross-border projects and issues that make more sense when the joint approach is adopted," said President Kaljulaid after the meeting with the President of the Commission.

The projects that fit this description also include large-scale transportation projects. President Juncker assured the continued financing of Rail Baltica during the next financial period at the meeting with the president. Juncker also thanked Estonia for its successful and productive Presidency.

The Head of State is on a work visit to Brussels today. While there, she will participate, apart from meeting Juncker, in two discussions with the leaders of European Political Strategy Centre and the European Union Institute for Security Studies to discuss issues related to the future of the European Union, joint defence initiatives and the Eastern Partnership. In the evening the Head of State will participate in the international opening performance of 'Mythos', the 9th Symphony by Erkki-Sven Tüür, at BOZAR concert hall.
