President Kersti Kaljulaid met today in Brussels with King Philippe and Prime Minister Charles Michel to discuss bilateral relations between Estonia and Belgium, the future of Europe, neighbourhood policies and co-operation in the sphere of defence.

President Kaljulaid and Prime Minister Michel discussed bilateral relations between Estonia and Belgium, the future of the European Union, neighbourhood policies and the upcoming summits of the European Union. According to the Head of State of Estonia, the success of Eastern Neighbourhood countries serves the interests of all the European Union Member States; therefore, the success of the upcoming Eastern Partnership summit in Brussels is of outmost importance.

The lengthy discussion also involved preparations for the European Union and African Union summit as well as President Kaljulaid's recent visit to Ethiopia and Rwanda.

At the meeting with King Philippe, the President of the Republic expressed her pleasure with the fact that Estonia and Belgium enjoy excellent co-operation, above all, in the sphere of defence, and she highlighted Belgium's air security mission in Ämari. Digital issues and opportunities to support the development of research in Europe were also discussed in length at the meeting.

Tomorrow President Kaljulaid will meet in Brussels with the current High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Frederica Mogherini, give a presentation about security in the digital era at the conference of the European Defence Agency and meet with the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg.
