President of the Republic, President Kersti Kaljulaid, met today in Kadriorg with the Turkish Minister of European Union Affairs and head negotiator, Ömer Çelik. The situation in Turkey and neighbouring countries, issues related to the migration crisis and e-governance were discussed at the meeting.

According to the Head of State, Estonia enjoys good bilateral co-operation with Turkey. Estonia will continue to support steps and efforts by Turkey that will keep it moving towards Europe, and it emphasised the importance of paying attention to both the development of the third sector and freedom of media. When speaking about the migration crisis, the Head of State acknowledged the efforts made by Turkey to keep the movement of refugees under control and expressed her hope that the European Union and Turkey will together be more efficient in dealing with the primary reasons for mass migration.
