President of the Republic, Kersti Kaljulaid, today proclaimed a law of the ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, known as the Istanbul Convention.

“Violence against women is a grating social problem, not an internal family matter. By acceding to the Convention we are conveying the explicit and strong message that our society does not tolerate violence against women. In fact, in our society there should be no space for any form of violence. For that purpose, the culture of turning a blind eye should be replaced by a culture of noticing and general awareness should be increased. However, we also need a legislation to support this,” said President Kaljulaid on proclaiming the law.

The aim of the Convention is to eradicate violence aimed against women, including young girls under the age of 18 years, which remains one of the primary reasons for continuing inequality between men and women.
