President of the Republic, Kersti Kaljulaid, met today in Kadriorg with the Federal President of Germany, Frank Walter Steinmeier.

"Germany is one of our closes allies in both the European Union and NATO, and the values that underlie both organisations also represent the foundation of our two countries. Uniformity and strong co-operation within the framework of these organisations along with keeping both the EU and NATO strong and operable are the tasks that we both stand for," said President Kaljulaid after the meeting.

The security situation in both Europe and our immediate neighbourhood, including issues related to Estonia's presidency of the Council of the EU and Eastern Partnership, were also discussed at the meeting. "We wish to maintain strong connections with the Eastern Partnership countries. We have no moral right to close the door and say who's in is in and who's out is out, full stop. We must support countries that attach high value to European values and continue to implement reforms," said the Head of State.

President Kaljulaid thanked the German Head of State for his country's long-term and substantial contribution to ensuring the security of the north-eastern corner of NATO and taking part in NATO's Baltic air security mission.

This afternoon, the heads of state gave a joint press conference in Kadriorg. President Steinmeier is accompanied to his visit to Estonia with his wife, Mrs Elke Büdenbender, who today visited Telliskivi Creative City and the Peeteli Congregation with Mr Georgi-Rene Maksimovski. In the evening, President Kaljulaid will host a dinner in Maarjamäe Palace to honour the German Head of State.
