President of the Republic, Kersti Kaljulaid, met yesterday in New York with the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, to discuss the aspirations of Estonia to become a non-permanent member of the Security Council of the United nations, reforms considered in the UN by Guterres and Estonia's priorities during its Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

"Every country has the right to decide its fate itself and the UN plays a key role in securing this right. However, the UN will only remain strong and fulfil its purpose when it has a real ability to take steps and respond adequately to the events that take place in the world. These spheres include peacekeeping, development assistance and human rights. Therefore it's important for the reforms initiated by Secretary General Guterres to be implemented. It's essential for small countries like Estonia that the UN remain an efficient and operable platform," stated President Kaljulaid after the meeting.

Secretary General thanked Estonia for our contribution to the UN missions and showed his interest in Estonia's priorities during our Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
