President Kersti Kaljulaid met today in Kadriorg with general Curtis Scaparrotti, current Commander of the United States European Command.

“Our meeting confirmed the commitment of the USA to contribute to ensuring the security of the Baltic states and continue our current cooperation,” said President Kaljulaid following the meeting. She added that NATO passed a historic decision at its last summit and has visibly strengthened the collective defence and deterrence approach of the Alliance. “We are now engaged in implementation of the decisions with our allies, and it is pleasant to hear that the Commander of the United States European Command is satisfied with Estonia’s contribution both to the strengthening of defence of NATO’s north-eastern corner and to international operations,” stated the Head of State.

Background information: the United States European Command in Germany commands the units of the Army, Air Force and Navy of the United States of America, which have the function of supporting its European allies and conducting various operations and training exercises. Soldiers of the United States of America, who are currently deployed in Estonia within the framework of operation Atlantic Resolve, also report to the United States European Command. General Scaparrotti is also the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) of NATO Allied Command Operations.
