"I am pleased to admit that Latvia and Estonia share a similar vision of co-operation between the Baltic states, in the spheres of security, energy independence and transport connection initiatives. The implementation of long-term objectives is reliant on good relations between neighbours. Estonia and Latvia have a common vision of the future of the region," stated President Kersti Kaljulaid, who is on an introduction visit to Latvia.

The Head of State met in Riga with the President of the Republic of Latvia, Raimonds Vējonis, and the Speaker of the Latvian Parliament, Ināra Mūrniece, to discuss economic and cultural co-operation between Estonia and Latvia, including the current status of the Rail Baltica project and celebration of the 100th anniversary of the republics of Estonia and Latvia.

President Kaljulaid emphasised the need for close co-operation between the two countries on the level of presidents, governments, parliaments and different authorities: "Latvia is one of our closest allies."

The Estonian Head of State stated at the meeting with the Latvian president that defence related co-operation has become more important than ever in the changed security environment. "The deployment of NATO's combat force units in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland was one of the most important decisions passed at the NATO Summit in Warsaw," commented President Kaljulaid; according to the President, the energy independence of the Baltic states from Russia is as important from a security aspect.

Presidents Kaljulaid and Vējonis together concluded that we need to contribute to IT-initiatives between the two countries. "There could also be trilateral data exchange between Finland, Estonia and Latvia, as Estonia is already involved in cross-border IT co-operation with Finland," mentioned President Kaljulaid.

The Head of State will return to Estonia this afternoon. President Kaljulaid will make her next foreign visit to Lithuania next Wednesday, 26 October.
