President Kersti Kaljulaid met in Kadriorg today with Dimitris Avramopoulos, European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, to discuss the situation in Europe against the background of the migration crisis.

It was stated at the meeting that the European Union Member States still face the challenges accompanying the migration crisis; however, the situation has somewhat improved in comparison to last year.

According to Avramopoulos, Estonia sets an example for the other Member States when it comes to the relocation of refugees.

"The migration crisis in Europe can only be solved by exercising solidarity and co-operation. All the Member States must engage in combined efforts to achieve this goal," stated President Kaljulaid.

The security situation in Europe and the ever more frequent acts of terrorism were also some of the main issues discussed at the meeting. The Head of State emphasised that efficient information exchange between the Member States is key in combatting terrorism. "Each and every citizen of the European Union has the right to feel safe. This can be ensured by co-operation between the policing authorities and special services of the Member States," added President Kaljulaid.
