President of the Republic, Kersti Kaljulaid, gives oath of office

10.10.2016

"I do believe and hope that in five years we can see more understanding and less condemnation in Estonia. More assistance and less shaming. More courage and less fear," said the President of the Republic, Kersti Kaljulaid, today in the Riigikogu in her address after giving the oath of office as Head of State.

She emphasised that the Republic of Estonia, which was restored 25 years ago, is a democratic 21st century country today and stated: "This has been achieved through the contribution of all Estonian people, irrespective of where they live, their profession or living standard."

"Today's children only know about the occupation as part of the memories of their grandparents. It is our job to keep up the faith that these children have in Estonia, themselves and the future," added President Kaljulaid.

In her address, the President stated that we have a society where diversified communities are becoming more and more important: "Each and every one of us creates the Estonia that he or she wishes to have. This merges into the state that belongs to all of us."

In her inauguration address, the Head of State emphasised the importance of education and courage to be entrepreneurial in order to ensure wealth and prosperity. "Apart from self-confidence, we must give our children education. This is the most important tool in ensuring they build a future for their own children," said President Kaljulaid.

Tonight, a formal reception will take place the Art Museum of Estonia in Kadriorg; President Toomas Hendrik Ilves and Ieva Ilves and the President of the Republic, Kersti Kaljulaid, and Georgi-Rene Maksimovski will hold a reception for the representatives of constitutional institutions of the Republic of Estonia, higher state public servants and the diplomatic corps.
