National Defence Council

The National Defence Council is an advisory body to the President of the Republic. The following are members of the council: the president of the Riigikogu, the Prime Minister, the chairman of the Riigikogu national defence committee, the chairman of the Riigikogu foreign affairs committee, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Defence, the Minister of Finance, the Minister of the Interior, the Minister of Justice and the Commander of the Defence Forces (in wartime, the Commander-In-Chief).

The council discusses questions that are relevant from the standpoint of national defence and issues its opinion regarding them.

The council holds both ordinary and extraordinary sessions. Ordinary sessions take place every two months, while extraordinary sessions are convened as needed and at the discretion of the President of the Republic.

The National Defence Council operates on the basis of rules of procedure approved by the President of the Republic.
